WEEKLY UPDATE

January 27 to January 31, 2020

FAMILY LITERACY DAY

In celebration of this day and to promote the importance of families reading together we invite you to join us on Monday January 27th for St. Augustine’s Family Literacy Day.  On this day, rather than wear your uniform, you are encouraged to dress up as one of your favourite authors or book characters. It could be from your favourite picture book, a character from a fiction novel or even someone you read a biography about.  Lots of photos will be taken so you might want to carry around the book that inspired your costume. If you do not have any ideas, come and talk to Ms Moffat in the Learning Commons in the next little while.

In addition to our book character costumes, the Learning Commons will be open one hour before school starts and one hour after dismissal to all school families who wish to participate.  Families will be invited to read together, play cooperative games, engage in storytelling activities and take part in an Escape Room type game based on authors, children's literature and wordplay. Snacks will be available and fun prizes awarded!  Set aside some time on Monday January 27 to celebrate and help us raise awareness of the importance of reading and engaging in other literacy-related activities as a family!

THE DOOR IS OPEN

On January 6, for our staff retreat, the entire St. Augustine School staff continued to explore what it means to be an Oblate Parish School.   Knowing that at the forefront of the Oblate mission is to serve the poor and the marginalized, we experienced this first hand at The Door Is Open, one of the four Catholic charities supported by the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Vancouver.   The staff celebrated mass, prepared and served meals to the under-privileged of the downtown eastside and also helped to sort, organize, and distribute clothing and non-perishable food donations to between 350 and 400 people in the neighbourhood.  It was a humbling and special day for us.   We learned from Sister Chita Torres and Father Gary Laboucane that there is an immediate need for underwear, socks, gloves, jackets, boots, blankets, and sweaters for both men and women.  We invite you to drop off any donations in the bins we have set up by the office.   We will be collecting donations until Friday, January 31.  Thank you in advance for your generosity.
