Parents

As in any great adventure, it’s good to have a guide. This is yours.

Right here, you’ll find much of the information you and your child need to experience St. Augustine to the fullest. Make sure you attend the Opening Parent Meeting on September 3, because all the rest of the information is provided then.

Faith is our greatest gift. We invite you to join in our school functions, particularly our liturgical celebrations. Living faith, as an example to your children, is the gift you give to them. Our children grow up knowing of God’s immense love for them and the call to Christian leadership.

  2. Be prepared.

  3. Do your best.

  4. Respect yourself and others.

Absence

Please phone in, or send a note with a sibling in the event your child will be absent from school. We’ll need a note the next day, with reasons for the absenteeism, signed by you. If the absence runs for more than four days, we need a doctor’s note too.

Visits

Please check in with the office when you arrive for a visit.

Pick Up

If you’re sending someone to pick up your children, please inform the office. Students are expected to leave the school directly after dismissal.

Drop Off

The designated drop off and pick up zone is along 8th Avenue, directly in front of the school. Student patrols monitor the area before and after school. Parking along the school grounds on Arbutus is not permitted. If you want to accompany your child onto the school grounds, you’ll have to find parking in the neighbourhood, but be aware that the City of Vancouver tickets parking infractions on a regular basis.

Entry

Students can enter school grounds by the gates on Arbutus Street or 8th Avenue at 8:10 am, no earlier, please. If it’s raining, children may come into the building when they arrive, otherwise, they play outside under adult supervision until the 8:40 bell. Students should enter and exit the building through the north doors. For reasons of safety, students may not wait by the front doors near the parking lot on 8th Avenue.

Vacations

Please plan your family vacations during school holidays. It’s disruptive to students, teachers and classes when children take vacation during regular school times.

Guide

Homework

This is an integral part of our learning process for many reasons.

  1. Children get the chance to share their growing knowledge with parents.

  2. They learn time management.

  3. They practice basic learning skills.

  4. It reinforces the lessons taught in the classroom.

  5. In intermediate grades, the children review daily work, complete projects and prepare for tests.

Primary children are assigned approximately 20 minutes of home study per day. Intermediate students receive 30 to 60 minutes per day.

Uniforms

The students wear the approved school uniform at all times.

For girls, that’s a blue plaid tunic (primary students) or blue plaid kilt (intermediate students), white blouse, navy blue socks or tights, navy blue or black dress shoes and a school cardigan with crest. A skirt or walking shorts may be worn in spring or fall, before Thanksgiving, after Easter.

For boys, it’s navy blue pants, white dress shirt, navy blue socks, navy blue or black dress shoes and school pullover sweater with crest. Walking shorts may be worn in spring and fall, before Thanksgiving, after Easter.

For gym, it’s navy blue uniform shorts, grey T-shirt with school name, indoor runners.

Rugby pants, jogging suits, jean jackets and other casual wear are not permitted, nor are pins and badges. Girls can wear simple hair bands and barrettes only, in blue, black or white. Jewelry of any kind is discouraged.

The school store above the library can supply all uniform items. It’s staffed by volunteer parents and is open on Fridays from 2:30 to 3:30. Parents of grade 3 girls, who will be switching from tunics to kilts in grade 4, must pre-order kilts in June to ensure availability in September.

Ordering uniforms for Kindergarten students can only be done by appointment. Call Cheryl Bastone at 604 734 0991 or email her at bastones@telus.net

Parent Education Committee

The purpose of the PEC is to provide support and leadership to our administration team. The committee meets monthly to add direction and clarity to the many tasks involved in running a school. Its members are St. Augustine’s parishioners who have agreed to a two year service commitment.
