Life at School
Kindergarten Overview 2011-2012
Welcome to St. Augustine’s school community. This is an exciting year for both you and your child with many new routines, experiences and challenges.
I hope that your child’s first experience at school will be positive and joy-filled. I ask that communication between home and school be open and honest and that you feel free to discuss concerns as well as celebrations with me. I am happy to set up appointments with you and encourage you to keep me informed of your child’s needs.
The following is an outline of concepts and skills that will be covered during the first term of school.
Throughout the first term the students will be:
Social and emotional development: (ongoing throughout the year)
•Gaining Independence, taking responsibility for their belongings and actions, cooperating in pairs, small groups and in whole groups, developing and maintaining friendships, showing respect for themselves and others, problem solving, risk-taking and taking pride in their accomplishments
Religion
•recognizing God as Creator
•recognizing themselves as a child of God
•participating in daily prayer
•listening to and recalling Bible stories
Language Arts
•demonstrating an ability to follow simple instructions
•demonstrating an understanding that print conveys meaning
•using basic grammar when speaking
•expressing thoughts and ideas
•experimenting with various forms of communication; written, oral, drama, movement
•participating in chants, stories, songs and poems
•asking questions and responding to questions related to listening activities
•speaking in turn
•participating in Letter of the week and K-Pal activities
•printing and forming letters of the alphabet
Math
•counting orally by 1’s, 5’s and 10’s
•classifying, describing and arranging objects
•sorting objects in a variety of ways
•creating and extending patterns
•participating in creating class graphs
•exploring Math Their Way stations
•following the MATH MAKES SENSE math program
Career and Health Planning
•communicating feelings
•practicing safety at school and following rules for safe behaviour
•making choices and decisions
•building resilience
•following problem solving routines
Science
•discovering autumn
•exploring our 5 senses
•learning how we grow and change from babies to now
Socials
•learning about self, home, school and community
Art
•using detail/colour in art work
•identifying elements of colour, line and shape
•using a variety of tools and materials to make art
•participating in an artist study
PE
•practicing safe behaviour and following rules when participating in gym activities
•identifying personal and general space
•learning cooperative games
For Your Information
•Please ensure your child is wearing the school uniform correctly and all uniform pieces are labeled.
•Wear shorts under uniform on PE days (Mon, Wed, Fri) and please send extra running shoes (non-marking sole) to stay at school.
•Report all absenteeism online at faithandfoundation.com
•Please provide your child with healthy snacks and lunches (NO PEANUTS/TREEENUTS, PLEASE). We encourage your child to bring their own water bottles. We do not recycle juice boxes at school…
•Ensure they are well rested (at least 10 hours of sleep each night)
•Scholastic book orders will be handed out each month
•Library day is FRIDAY- please have your child bring back their book in the Library bag on that day so that they can take out another book.
•Please check school bags for notes and calendars on a daily basis and a weekly overview every Friday
