Religion

1. •Continue to participate in morning prayer through listening to Bible readings from the Children’s Daily Prayer book and offering intentions
   

2. •Participate in Advent activities
   

3. •Learn the major events leading up to the birth of Christ and the visit of the Magi
   

4. •Recite prayers:  Our Father, Meal Grace and Hail Mary.  Focus of our second term is to learn to recite the Our Father and Hail Mary.   
   

5. •Explore the image of Jesus as the Good Shepherd
   

6. •Learn the parables of the Mustard Seed and the Good Samaritan
   

7. •Learn stories of how Jesus cares for us:  healing the blind, healing the crippled, healing the paralyzed and feeding the hungry
   

8. •Learn about the Creation story and connect it to ways to care about our world
   

9. •Explore the importance of names and how Jesus called God “Abba” (Father)
   

10. •Participate in the “I’m a Gift from God” program which discusses inappropriate touching and what children can do in the situation.  A letter will come home when the program starts. 
    

Language Arts

1. •Continue to work on listening skills and speaking in turn
   

2. •Speaking in a clear strong voice and in complete sentences
   

3. •Continue working on 5 sight words a week.  Focus on learning to read these words quickly and not sounding them out.
   

4. •Short vowels (/u/ and /e/), long vowels (vowel-consonant-silent e and two vowels together), consonant combinations such as sh/ch/th and br/bl/sl, plurals, alphabetical order, opposites, syllables
   

5. •Continue printing letters and numbers in a top to bottom and left to right formation and reminding students to hold their pencils correctly
   

6. •Reading strategies:

9. - sight words
   

10. - look for smaller words or parts.  For example,    morning, has the parts /or/ and /ing/
    

11. - rhyming words.  For example, if you know /cat/, you know /pat/

13. •Journal writing:  the goal will be to write five complete sentences about one topic.  Listen for the sounds in words by saying the word slowly to stretch it out.  Think of sight words s/he knows how to spell.  Practice looking at the word wall as a source of correctly spelled words.
    

14. •Creative writing:  the goal is for children to write freely to get the flow of ideas, without being overly concerned about spelling

2. •Families Change:  exploring events that bring change to a family (such as starting school, birth of new siblings, injury), describing the past and  present events in their own personal lives, and comparing past and present technologies in a general way
